Helen Dale’s first novel ‘The Hand That Signed The Paper’ won critical acclaim and a variety of prestigious prizes like the Miles Franklin Award. Yet, what followed her heightened visibility in the public eye was not a privileged pathway to more success, but a decades-long cancel-culture witchhunt. In her book she described the pressures on and the weaknesses of Ukrainians during WWII. Stalin committed a genocide against them only a few years earlier. The Nazis, at the time, looked like an opportunity to break free from Russian control. It is this historical dilemma Vladimir Putin weaponizes against Ukraine today. In those dark years a disproportionate number of Holocaust enablers emerged from this brutalised country. Cultures change. Ukrainians have made huge strides in the past. One very visible, and thus often repeated, example is that they voted for a president who is the descendent of survivors of both major genocides the country had seen, the Holocaust and the Holodomor.
The publisher ‘Fischer Verlag’ has dropped successful author Monika Maron. The official reason is that the house does not respect her freedom of association, enshrined in, among other places, the United Nation’s Declaration of Human Rights. Her guilt by association is the small bookstore ‘Buchhaus Loschwitz’ which functioned as a publisher for her essay compendium ‘Crooked Figures, Bitten by the Wind, Three Decades of Essays.’ Fischer was offered the compendium, but declined and agreed with the author’s cooperation with a second publisher. The gripe was about Monika Maron’s choice, the little bookstore.
Susanne Dagen, the owner of ‘Buchhaus Loschwitz,’ has a Youtube book show called ‘Book Opened. Book Closed. Reading With Right-Wingers.’ The show is co-hosted by Ellen Kositza who is the wife of Götz Kubitschek. Who? The devil, of course. At the end of this long chain of contacts is the devil. A conservative. Kubitschek is also a publisher and the media paints him as a Neonazi for years on end. In reality, though, none of these people are Darth Vader, or Hitler, or Voldemort. The true reason has probably more to do with Monika Maron’s own texts. But who is Monika Maron? And what is her body of work? I give you an introduction in this video.
With so much things going on, too much to research right now, continue with my series on Kübra Gümüsay, the activist who does not want to be your cleaner.
Our favorite social justice warrior is sharing her insight on freedom, democracy, justice and nice. Because all these things are now one and the same and mean gay marriage, Islam or migration, it is a chance to talk about that sly shift of meaning. Also the villain of our self-governing system, racism, has a definition journey behind itself. Originating in pseudo-genetics it has arrived at today’s system-rattling Halloween-costume and accent-recognition trauma that we are familiar with.
